Homemade Christmas pastries, cookies, and candies have been popular Christmas gift ideas for generations. In fact, gifts of homemade deserts are traditional at Christmas time. Why not continue in the Christmas tradition by making edible gifts for your loved ones? When it’s homemade it’s always special.

Below are some great  easy recipes for the season that take almost no time to make but are delicious.

1) Candy Cane Cookies

 INGREDIENTS:

  • 1/2 cup butter
  • 1/2 cup shortening
  • 1 cup sifted confectioners’ sugar
  • 1 egg
  • 1 1/2 teaspoons almond flavoring
  • 1 teaspoon vanilla extract
  • 2 1/2 cups sifted all-purpose flour
  • 1 teaspoon salt
  • 1/2 teaspoon red food coloring

PREPARATION:

Preheat oven to 350 degrees F (180 degrees C).

Cream the shortening and butter; mix in sugar, egg, almond and vanilla. In a separate bowl, mix flour and salt and add to shortening mixture. Divide dough in half.

Blend red food coloring into one half.

2 )Melting Snowball Cookies

INGREDIENTS:

  • 2 cups butter
  • 1/2 cup cornstarch
  • 3 cups flour
  • 1 cup confectioner sugar

PREPARATION:

Cream butter; add remaining ingredients and mix well. Drop on cookie sheet (1/2-1 inch balls). Bake at 350 degrees for approx. 20 minutes. Cool, then roll in sifted confectioner sugar. - Lina, forum member
 

3) Chewy Oatmeal Raisin Cookies

INGREDIENTS:

  • 3/4 cup butter flavored shortening
  • 1 1/4 cups brown sugar
  • 1 egg
  • 1/3 cup milk
  • 1 1/2 teaspoons vanilla
  • 3 cups oats, rolled (raw) quick/ old fashioned
  • 1 cup flour all-purpose
  • 1/2 teaspoon baking soda
  • 1/4 teaspoon cinnamon
  • 1 cup raisins
  • 1 cup walnuts chopped

PREPARATION:

Lightly grease cookie sheet with shortening. Combine shortening, brown sugar, egg, milk, and vanilla; beat with mixer on high speed to blend well. Combine oats, flour, baking soda, salt and cinnamon; add to shorteing mixture and combine until just blended.
Stir in raisins and nuts. Drop by rounded tablespoonfuls onto cookie sheet, 2 inches apart. Bake at 375 for 10-13 min., or until lightly browned. Cool 2 min. on cooling rack
 

4) Thumb Cookies

INGREDIENTS:

  • 1/2 cup butter (I’ve used margarine before)
  • 1/4 cup sugar
  • 1 egg yolk, well beaten
  • 1 teaspoon vanilla
  • 1 cup flour
  • 1/2 teaspoon salt
  • 1 egg white, unbeaten
  • 1 cup finely chopped walnuts

PREPARATION:

Cream together butter and sugar. Beat in egg yolk, and vanilla. Add flour and salt, blend in. Form into 1 inch balls. Roll in egg white, then roll in nuts. Place on ungreased cookie sheet, and, using your thumb, indent the center of each ball.Bake at 350 for 5 minutes, remover from oven, and indent again (they will puff up a bit and need the second indenting). Bake for another 12 minutes or so. Cool completely, then fill with frosting or sprinkles.

5) Egg Nog Pound Cake

INGREDIENTS:

  • 1 box yellow cake mix
  • 1 small package instant vanilla pudding mix
  • 3/4 cup canned egg nog
  • 3/4 cup vegetable oil
  • 4 eggs
  • 1/2 teaspoon nutmeg
  • Powdered Sugar

PREPARATION:

Combine first 4 ingredients; mix on low speed in mixer until moistened. Add eggs and nutmeg. Beat for 4 minutes on high speed. Pour into a greased and floured bundt pan or tube pan. Bake at 350 F. for 40 to 45 minutes until a toothpick insterted into the middle of the cake comes out clean.

Cool for 10 minutes; remove from pan.

6) Christmas Toffee

INGREDIENTS:

  • 1 cup pecans, chopped
  • 3/4 cup packed brown sugar
  • 1/2 cup margarine or butter
  • 1/2 cup semisweet chocolate chips

PREPARATION:

Grease the bottom and sides of a 9 x 9 x 2 inch square pan with margarine. Spread pecans in the pan. Heat the brown sugar and margarine to boiling, stirring constantly. Boil 7 minutes, stirring constantly.

Pour and spread evenly over pecans, sprinkle with chocolate chips.

Cover pan with a cookie sheet; after about 1 minute, spread the softened chocolate chips over candy. Cut into squares while warm. Refrigerate until firm.
